When We Kill The Creators is a soul rock and roll movie about love, talent, death and music, it is about a singer's (Shelby Lynne) improbable journey to reach her dreams and when she does, it's about the price she has paid and the question of whether or not it was worth it.
A musical film of sorts, as Tommy Gold (Shelby Lynne) steps into her final act. Featuring fourteen original songs written by director/writer Cynthia Mort and Shelby Lynne. The music used is strictly diegetic. Fusing lyrics, visual images, and sound to create a stronger presentation and interpretation of the meaning being conveyed to the viewer.
Shelby Lynne’s emboldens every inch of Tommy Gold's character. Her notable music career includes, Female Vocalist of the Year (1990) from the Academy of Country Music and Best New Grammy Artist for “I Am Shelby Lynne” (2001). Her acting career includes playing Johnny Cash’s mother in Walk the Line and numerous TV appearances. Joining Lynne is Ally Walker (Far More/Ghosted/Sons of Anarchy) record label owner, Elisabeth Rohm (Bombshell/American Hustle/Joy) tour manager, Tony Joe White (songs Polk Salad Annie/Rainy Night In Georgia) the singers’ angel, Jim Tavare (Harry Potter/BAFTA) Tommy’s driver and Hugo Armstrong (Roman Israel Esq./Lucky) record executive. The movie was filmed on 16 mm film (transferred to digital) as an artistic endeavor throughout Hollywood and Capitol Records, and helmed by writer/director Cynthia Mort (Nina, The Brave One, Roseanne). Shelby Lynne's band features Don Was (Base), Christopher Stills (guitar), Zachery Ray (piano) and Michael J. Moore (drums).
